Published!

Since I last blogged I've been published! My homework from my creative writing class was to send a letter to either a newspaper or magazine in the hope that it would get published, so I wrote to the local paper and my letter was published in the paper and on it's website!

As soon as my tutor told us what the homework was I knew exactly what I was going to write about. Even though it's not a very interesting subject, I chose to write about potholes. The reason being that there are so many of them all over the roads that I drive on every day and they are really starting to get on my nerves. I wrote it as soon as I came home from my other class on Thursday evening after driving over them once again and really hoped it would get published as I wanted to have something else 'out there' with my name as the author and it would also mean that I had achieved the homework.

Instead of posting my letter I physically put it through the door of the newspaper offices on the weekend as I wanted them to receive it as soon as they opened up on the Monday. I was quietly confident that I would get published as it wasn't something which could be controversial or was derogatory about anything in Weston and it was only a letter, but I had a slight bit of doubt in the back of my mind as I had written it quite quickly and they might have thought it wasn't very well written. But as soon as I bought the paper on Thursday morning I had a look at the first page of letters but didn't see it, then I turned to the next page and there it was! They had given it the title of 'Our or their attention' as I had used that quote in my letter and I was really proud!

During the day at work I had a look at the website, as I usually do to keep up with the news and I saw that my letter had been put on there as well just with another title. I emailed my tutor when I got home to let her know that I had been successful in my homework and also included the link to a website where I had had a comment published on an article and she was really pleased for me.

Even though it was only a letter, I was really proud that I'd been successful in getting published again and it gave me hope for the poems I sent away to a magazine a while ago. I just hope I hear something from them soon as I also requested a short critique so I'll at least get a response one way or the other.
