Set in the afterlife reserved only for people who have killed themselves, the film follows Zia (Patrick Fugit) as he gets used to his new surroundings and makes friends. After hearing his girlfriend committed suicide after his funeral, Zia and his friend, Eugene (Shea Whigham) – a former rock star who ‘outted’ himself by pouring beer on his guitar while on stage – go on a road trip to try and find her.
Along the way they come across Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) who claims she got there by accident and is searching for the ‘people in charge’, so they take her along with them and try to help her adjust to the new surroundings and the no smiling rule.
During their journey, the group encounter various other people including Tom who claims he is able to perform miracles and Nanuk – a mute Eskimo who teaches Eugene to throat sing - before they finally find Desiree. But she’s not the girl Zia left behind. She’s been converted to the belief that people are ‘stuck’ in life and the only way to live is to commit suicide again. While she tries to convince Zia of this belief, he realises that while he’s been searching for Desiree, he’s fallen for Mikal and decides to help her find her way back to life – with him in tow.I wasn’t really sure about this film due to the name of it, but I’d seen it a couple of times in shops and decided that I’d give it a go and I really enjoyed it. It’s weird in that it’s set in the afterlife of people who have committed suicide and no one is allowed to smile, but once you get into it those things don’t bother you and it’s just like a regular film.
I would recommend it to anyone who likes films which are a bit out there.
