Call me Claus - review

When Lucy Cullins (Whoopi Goldberg) visits Santa Claus in 1965, she only has 1 wish – for her father who is away in the Army to come home.

As Santa promises to do all he can, he allows her to try on his hat and is surprised but happy when it glows as it shows she believes in the Christmas spirit with all her heart. But when Lucy, her mum and younger brother return home they are met by some tragic news – Lucy’s father has been killed in action.

Years later as she works as a producer for a TV shopping channel, Lucy is faced with the task of hiring a Santa Claus for the Christmas period, but with memories of what happened at Christmas when she was younger and holding Santa Claus personally responsible, she has no intention of enjoying the festive season.

Meanwhile Santa Claus (Nigel Hawthorne) is informed by his elves that his 200 years of being Santa is almost up and he must find someone new to take over. But with Lucy being the only name on the list, he knows he’ll have a hard time getting her to believe in the spirit of Christmas.

With the threat of the end of the world hanging over him, Santa approaches Lucy to ask her to take on the job and inadvertently ends up being hired for her shopping channel. But with time running out and Lucy’s Christmas spirit at an all time low, can he convince her to believe in the magic of Christmas and take on the most important job of all?

Starring Nigel Hawthorne in his last acting role before his death in December 2001, I found this movie to be charming and funny and one which I would recommend.
