My so-called Afterlife - review

For my 21st birthday I had a long list of books which I asked people to get for me and I dived into one as soon as I could. It was called 'My so-called Afterlife' by Tamsyn Murrary and in the last 20 minutes I have just finished reading it.

It's told from the point of view of 15 year old Lucy Shaw who ever since being murdered on her way home from a New Years Eve party, has had to stay in the men's loos where her body was found. No one has ever seen her and after having fun with the few homeless men who visit, she's starting to get bored, that is until she meets someone who can actually see her, Jeremy.

Frightened and scared at first, Jeremy is sceptical when Lucy explains that she's a ghost and was murdered, but as time goes by and he gets used to the idea that he is the only living person to see her, he becomes her only connection to the living world and proves 'useful' to Lucy.

He finds out there's a place called 'The Church of the Dearly Departed' where psychics communicate with the dead to pass on messages to the living they left behind. He also finds out how Lucy can leave her toilet, all she has to do is make sure she has a piece of the place she haunts with her. At the Dearly D, Jeremy finds out things on Lucy's behalf while Lucy stays outside and finds a friend in another young ghost, Hep. Hep teaches her how to move things and how to start 'living as a ghost' and introduces her to Ryan, the best looking guy Lucy has ever seen.

As the story goes on, Lucy spends all her time with Hep and starts dating Ryan. Jeremy does all he can to help Lucy try and 'pass over' and resolves to find her killer. In the end, all 3 ghosts manage to pass over and Jeremy is set up, by Lucy, with a girl who can also see ghosts.

I really enjoyed reading it and found that even though the main character is 15 and I'm 21, I could easily 'think' like her and thought the way it's written was excellent seeing as it was written from the point of view of someone who is dead. I would definitely recommend it.

Now I have to decide which out of the other 7 new books I got to read next!
