Thirteen Reasons Why - review

This was the next book I chose to read and after only about a week and a half, bearing in mind I work full time and go to college 2 nights a week, I completed it on Sunday.

It's based on 13 audio tapes which are left in a parcel on the doorstep of Clay Jensen. Intrigued, he starts to listen and recognises the voice speaking to him as a school friend, Hannah Baker, who killed herself 2 weeks before. Through the 13 tapes she explains how 13 people all contributed to her making the decision to end her life. She has decided to make sure the tapes make their way through all 13 people and includes a map of certain places which she wants them to visit whilst listening to the tapes. She wants them all to know what they did and how something so trivial to them, hurt her more than they could have imagined.

Clay would have loved to, but never really got the chance to get to know Hannah, so he can't really understand why he is on the list, until he hears the tape meant for him. He could have saved her, but she didn't allow him to get close enough.

It was a really good book and I liked the way that it was written from 2 people's points of view, as Hannah's voice is written in italic and you get to hear what Clay is doing while he is listening to the tapes as it's written 'now'.

A sensitive and devastating subject handled with care and expertly written to give you the sense of how someone who is considering suicide feels beforehand. I would definitely recommend it.

I've already chosen my next book. It's called 'If I Stay' by Gayle Foreman and wasn't actually one of the books I got for my birthday. I bought it while I was in Birmingham with a gift card I got for my birthday, so technically I did get it for my birthday - just from myself! I'm hoping to start reading it this weekend, so I'll be writing a review when I finish - give it about 2 weeks just to be on the safe side!

Bye for now xxx
