I found The Jane Austen Book Club when I was looking for a father's day present in my local supermarket and after deliberating on whether to buy it - as I don't need anymore dvd's, we're running out of space as it is! - I decided to and planned on watching it when I got home.
I actually watched it the next day as I spent the Saturday with a friend of mine and her newborn baby - he's so cute!
It was about 6 people with the joint interest of Jane Austen novels who decide to get together, read all 6 novels and discuss them. It also serves as a distraction for a lady who has just split up with her husband and another who is thinking of leaving her husband for a student of hers. All 6 members choose a book each and take it in turns to talk about it each month.
Bernadette is a 50 something divorcee who loves to provide advice and support to those around her. She meets Prudie in the queue for a Jane Austen marathon at the cinema and after listening to her problems, decides to create the book club as a distraction for her and also to allow them to talk about their love of Jane Austen. She knows she can rely on Jocelyn to definitely become a member. Jocelyn is a commitment phobe whose only love is for her dogs. She meets and invites Austen virgin Grigg along to the book club in the hope that he can get together with Sylvia whose husband left her and their openly gay grown up daughter Allegra, who joins the group to avoid her mother finding out she loves partaking in extreme sports.
It stars a range of actors, some of whom I've heard of and seen before, but a couple were new to me. Emily Blunt, Hugh Dancy & Kevin Zegers (who only has a small part) were the only actors I'd heard of, but the rest of the cast was made up of great actors who all blended well to create a believable group of friends.
I found it a really good watch and surprised that it hadn't been advertised more when it came out in 2008. I would definitely recommend it.
