Room by Emma Donoghue

Room is told from the point of view of Jack, a 5 year old boy who lives with his Ma in a single locked room hidden from the world.

Jack spends his days catching up with the TV characters he calls friends and playing basic games with his Ma, but at night unlike other children, he sleeps in the wardrobe under a thin blanket.

Jack knows nothing apart from what he’s been told by Ma, but what she doesn’t tell him is that Room is all there is, there’s a whole world outside of Room.

I don’t feel I can say I ‘enjoyed’ this book due to the subject and what is involved in it, but I found it worth a read. From the basic information supplied on the back of the book I didn’t have a clue what it was about, so I avoided reviews so I could read it with fresh eyes. It took a while to get used to it as it’s written in the way a 5 year old child speaks, but once you get used to it, the book is hard to put down.
