Philadelphia - review

A heart warming movie that follows Andrew Bennett (Tom Hanks) as he battles with the debilitating illness, Aids.

As a successful lawyer Andrew is surprised when his bosses fire him unexpectedly and comes to the conclusion it’s because of his illness. So with the help of a homophobic and rival lawyer (Denzel Washington), Andrew sues his former employers, but despite the love and support of his family and partner (Antonio Banderas) and with his lawyer beginning to become more accepting, Andrew’s health deteriorates as the trial continues to the point where the outcome is clear.

I found Philadelphia to be a touching and well written film focussing on the sensitive subjects of Aids and homophobia told in a way that shows both sides of the story. Tom Hanks’ portrayal of an ailing young man was very realistic and I commend his dedication to the role.
