Dan
Burns is a newspaper advice columnist who having lost his wife is bringing up
his 3 young daughters alone. With his eldest wanting to drive and his middle
child telling him she is in love, he’s thankful for the family get together planned
for the weekend – a chance to get away from work and spend time with family,
but he doesn’t count on the weekend turning his love life around.
On
a trip to a local book store Dan meets Marie, a lady who shares his love of
books and asks for his advice on what to buy. With lots in common, they share a
coffee and lose track of time talking before Marie tells him she’s late in
meeting her boyfriend.
As
Dan returns to his parents’ house he’s excited to have found someone he feels
he could fall for and his family notice the difference in him. With questions
fired at him from all angles, his brother Mitch asks his new girlfriend to
participate, but when she walks into the room Dan instantly recognises her as
the woman from the book store.
Despite
there being a spark between them, both Dan and Marie carry on as normal, but
with their attraction becoming stronger as the weekend progresses, Dan becomes
frustrated for always putting his family before his own feelings.
With
his daughters trying to pull away and the rest of the family becoming fond of
Marie, Dan feels his life is running away from himself and when he’s set up on
a blind date he discovers Marie feels the same way about him as she is
evidently jealous, but can they upset Mitch and give into their feelings for
each other?
Starring Steve Carrell, I wasn’t sure whether
I would enjoy this movie as it was billed as a ‘dark comedy’, but surprisingly
I did and I would watch it again.
A
great story of how personal happiness is as important as spending time with
family.
