After the death of her mother, Nim and her scientist father
Jack inhabit a desert island in the middle of the south Atlantic sea. As Jack
works on new projects and Nim enjoys spending time with her wild animal friends
and reading the next Alex Rider adventure, they happily exist just the two of
them.
When Jack goes out in search of a new species, Nim is keen
to stay behind as one of her lizards is due to give birth and although not keen
at the beginning, Jack agrees to leave her behind. While he’s away, a great
storm battles their make shift home and the boat, leaving Jack stranded on a slowly
sinking boat and Nim alone with no way of contacting him.
Meanwhile in the safe environment of her apartment in San
Francisco, reclusive writer Alexandra Rider spends her days living out
adventures through her characters and avoiding the great outdoors. With no
desire to even walk out to her mailbox, Alexandra reaches out to Jack through
email to learn about volcanoes and ends up talking with Nim.
As they get to know each other, Alex eventually discovers
that Nim is not Jack’s research assistant, but his 11 year old daughter and
she’s all alone on the island they call home. With Nim asking for help, Alex
wants to do what she can, but she knows she could never leave the safety of her
apartment until her alter-ego Alex Rider tells her she can’t keep living her
life through her characters and forces her to go to Nim – it’s time for a real
life adventure.
Starring Abigail Breslin, Gerard Butler and Jodie Foster,
this family fun adventure was a joy to watch.
