Based on true events and directed by Sofia Coppola, The Bling Ring follows a group of
high-school students as they burgle celebrity houses after following them on
social media.
As new kid Marc aims to settle into his new school, he makes
friends with Rebecca, a socialite whose intention in life is to party hard and
get high rather than earn good grades, but when she takes him to a house which
doesn’t belong to either of them and walks away with things, he doesn’t react
in the normal way.
Not calling the police but instead enjoying the thrill and
fitting in with the cool kids, soon Marc, Rebecca and their friends are
breaking into celebrities houses every week after finding their whereabouts on the
internet as well as their addresses.
Riding high on their hobby, the friends enjoy bragging about
their hauls, but when security footage is released of them leaving a house,
they soon get scared. As they lay low while the police struggle to identify the
burglars, the gang can’t resist breaking into yet another house, but when they
are finally identified and caught, they soon learn who their true friends are.
With the gang all ending up with jail sentences, Marc
discovers Rebecca set him up by leaving the state to stay with her father
knowing she wouldn’t be caught as quick, yet Nicolette manages to use her new
found fame to further her career as a media sweetheart.
Although based on true events, it seemed quite far-fetched
that anyone could just walk into a house, spend time going through things and walk
out without a single alarm going off. I didn’t find this movie as fun as I
thought it would be and was left disappointed.
