Deadpool - review

When former military officer Wade Wilson discovers he’s dying from cancer, he resolves to find a way to prevent his death no matter what, but what he doesn’t count on is being made to suffer as he becomes a superhero.

Nearly tortured to death by experimental science Wade soon becomes invincible, just wanted he wanted, but as any superhero knows, with great power comes great responsibility and he’s soon called upon to help when needed.

Despite getting his wish and not dying, Wade decides he can’t tell his fiancĂ© Vanessa about his new life and so leaves her thinking he’s gone away to die, but when she becomes mixed up in his new way of living and held against her will by evil scientist Ajax, Wade knows he has no choice but to reveal his new identity.

This superhero action movie broke the ‘4th wall’ meaning that Ryan Reynolds’s character Wade spoke to the watching audience.

As much as I try to watch movies in different genres, this movie didn’t really do it for me and I didn’t completely understand what was going on most of the time.

Not one I’d seen again.

Woman in Gold - review

Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann, an Austrian-Jewish woman who years after fleeing her home,  takes on the Austrian government in an attempt to reclaim valuable art taken away from her family during the Nazi invasion.

Among the art is a portrait of her aunt Adele painted by renowned artist Gustav Klimt who became well known for his ‘Woman in Gold’, but with the portrait hung in one of the biggest museum’s in Austria and known as a national treasure, she sure has a fight on her hands.

Taking on Ryan Reynolds as her newly qualified lawyer and travelling back to the country she once escaped from, they find a friend in a journalist who does all he can to help their cause. But as they fight to reclaim what’s rightfully Maria’s, they open up a big debate between Austria & America which results in them suing the Austrian government and opening the floodgates for other Austrians to stake their claims.

Based on the true story of Maria Altmann who died in 2011, this movie showed how the Nazi invasion continued to affect people years after it happened. It was interesting to learn about this side of the war and I also found the movie very moving.

Definitely worth watching.

Foolproof - review

In their spare time, a trio of uni friends play Foolproof, a game in which they come up with ideas of how to carry out high end robberies, but with no intention of actually pulling them off.

But when one of their ideas is stolen and the robbery takes place, they are blackmailed into taking centre stage in a real life heist by a well known criminal.

With the threat of jail on their minds, they use their skills to work alongside Leo (David Suchet) in the hope of not being caught, but even though they haven’t actually pulled off any of their ideas by working together and playing to their strengths, they actually prove to be Foolproof.

A fun heist movie starring Ryan Reynolds which I enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Think Oceans Eleven, but with less people.
