Woman in Gold - review

Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann, an Austrian-Jewish woman who years after fleeing her home,  takes on the Austrian government in an attempt to reclaim valuable art taken away from her family during the Nazi invasion.

Among the art is a portrait of her aunt Adele painted by renowned artist Gustav Klimt who became well known for his ‘Woman in Gold’, but with the portrait hung in one of the biggest museum’s in Austria and known as a national treasure, she sure has a fight on her hands.

Taking on Ryan Reynolds as her newly qualified lawyer and travelling back to the country she once escaped from, they find a friend in a journalist who does all he can to help their cause. But as they fight to reclaim what’s rightfully Maria’s, they open up a big debate between Austria & America which results in them suing the Austrian government and opening the floodgates for other Austrians to stake their claims.

Based on the true story of Maria Altmann who died in 2011, this movie showed how the Nazi invasion continued to affect people years after it happened. It was interesting to learn about this side of the war and I also found the movie very moving.

Definitely worth watching.
