Although this
movie is technically a remake of classic fairy-tale Snow White, this isn’t her
story. This is the story of the evil queen who after the death of the king,
took ownership of all the land turning it from being happy and bright, into a
poor and icy kingdom.
With a
step-daughter who reminds her too much of how the kingdom used to be, Snow
White is locked up in the castle grounds and allowed no contact with the
outside world. But when she turns 18 she is encouraged by the servants to visit
the land her father was so proud of and so she sets off to discover what the
Queen doesn’t want her to see and is shocked to discover why the land is so
poor.
When she
returns to the castle and the Queen discovers Snow White has left the grounds
she orders her to be killed, but sympathetic to her cause, the butler allows
her to escape and along the way she stumbles across the woodland home of a gang
of dwarves who survive by acting as bandits and robbing anyone they come into
contact with in the woods.
After
learning she’s not on the side of the Queen, the dwarves allow Snow White to
become one of the gang and teach her the skills to survive in the woods and
while she learns to live with them, she also helps out with the household
chores of course.
But when
news of the impending marriage of the Queen and a Prince she has put under a
powerful love spells hits them, they realise they need to pull together to
bring down the Queen once and for all and to allow Snow White to regain control
of the kingdom which is rightfully hers. And although it goes against all the
rules of fairytales, Snow White knows that as well as saving the kingdom, it’s
up to her to save the Prince as well.
Starring
Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White and a surprise
appearance from Sean Bean, this was an enjoyable family fun watch which anyone
could enjoy.
5 stars.
