A Long Way Down - review

When disgraced breakfast TV host Martin Sharp climbs to the top of Fleet Tower on New Year’s Eve armed with a ladder, he only has one thing in mind – to jump off.  Suffering the loss of his career, marriage & children, Martin feels suicide is the only way out, but before he has a chance to jump he’s interrupted by fellow jumper Maureen.

Also planning on ending her life that night, Maureen asks Martin when he’ll be done so she can take her turn, but as they chat they are joined by politician’s daughter Jess & pizza delivery guy JJ who also have the same idea.

As the four of them realise they’ve chosen the most popular spot on the most popular night for suicide, they bond over their shared idea and decide to make their way safely back to ground level  before splitting up and going their separate ways. But when Jess takes an overdose and is rushed to hospital, they reunite & make a pact to carry on with life until Valentine’s Day in the hope they can all hold on until then.

With the press already on the story of the ‘Topper House Four’ Martin takes this opportunity to try and rebuild his career and persuades the others to embrace the attention, but while Jess & JJ share his opinion, shy housewife Maureen is determined to all she can to protect her disabled son.

As the four of them continue to bond over their reasons for wanting to end their lives and with the media attention turning sour, they decide the best way to avoid their troubles is to get away from it all, so they book a holiday to enjoy sun, sea & sand to escape normal life.

But can a shared friendship & a holiday in the sun really change their minds about why they spent New Year’s Eve on top of a tower block?

Starring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots & Aaron Paul, I really enjoyed this black comedy which although centered on suicide, gave an insight into how some people feel it can be their only option and provided an enjoyable movie.

Based on the novel by Nick Hornby, this movie is worthy of a recommendation and is one which I would happily watch again.
