Made in 1982 and being one of the highest grossing films of
all time for 10 years straight, you’d think I would have had the chance to
watch ET, but sadly not. Not being a big fan of sci-fi movies, it was never one
I felt I wanted to or needed to watch, but during the Christmas period I found
myself sitting down to watch it on TV and ended up quite enjoying it.
After an alien spacecraft is spotted landing in the middle
of the night, a crew of hunters / enthusiasts race towards the landing site
eager to catch a glimpse of any life forms, but as they approach it the
spacecraft races away accidentally leaving one of their own behind. Forced to
hide in fear of being caught, the alien makes its way to a shed to find
shelter, but is soon discovered by Elliott, a young boy whose first thought is
to scream and run.
Not believed by his mum and siblings that an alien is hiding
in the garden, Elliott reaches out to the alien and soon treats it like a
friend, inviting it to stay in his bedroom and introducing it to his brother
Michael and sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore).
As the 4 of them work together to help the alien return
home, they teach it to speak and give him the name ET, but when the authorities
become aware of him and catch onto their plan, they must find a way to avoid
him becoming an experiment and let him go despite finding his way into their
hearts and becoming one of the family.
Mindful of how old the movie is, I was aware that what was
considered futuristic and clever technology back in the 80’s would perhaps
appear amateur against today’s standards, but despite this I found it to still
be believable as an alien movie and one I’m glad I’ve now watched.
