Everybody's fine - review

Robert De Niro is Frank Goode, a recent widower who’s looking forward to his four children returning home for a family reunion.

As he tidies the house and garden, buys a new barbecue and gets everything ready, 1 by 1 his children cancel their visit prompting Frank to take it upon himself to travel across the country to visit them instead.

Advised by his doctor not to travel following recent health issues, Frank ignores this advice and is determined to catch up with his sons and daughters in the first meet up since their mother’s death, but with no luck in catching up with his son David in New York, he moves onto his daughter Amy (Kate Beckinsale).

Shocked at his arrival, Amy informs him he can only stay one night as she’s on her way out of town on a business trip, but nevertheless Frank makes the most of his short time with her and his grandson before travelling onto seeing his other children.

Despite only spending a short amount of time with each, Frank gets the feeling that each one of them is keeping something from him, something they would have easily told their mother if she was still alive, but with their relationship somewhat distant, can they work together to re-build the family which was once so close?

I found this movie to be quite moving in places showing how tragedy touches a family and how keeping secrets in an attempt to protect someone can actually keep a family apart.

Co-starring Kate Beckinsale, Drew Barrymore and Sam Rockwell, I enjoyed this drama and couldn’t help tearing up towards the end.
