The Call - review

6 months after a mistake on her part caused a girl to be abducted and murdered, 911 operator Jordan decides she can no longer be on the front line of calls and takes up a position training new employees.

Still traumatised from the last call she took, Jordan is happy to no longer be in the thick of it, but when a young girl Kacey calls 911 after being abducted and a newly qualified operator panics, she has no choice but to jump in.

Determined to do everything she can to avoid losing this girl, Jordan uses all her inner strength and experience to re-assure Kacey that she will do everything she can to help her, but with Kacey locked in the trunk of a car with no idea where she’s heading and the police unable to get a trace on her phone, Jordan must remain calm despite being haunted by her past experience.

Starring Halle Berry & Abigail Breslin, The Call was a fantastic tense thriller which kept me gripped from beginning to end.

A great movie which I wouldn’t hesitate to watch again.

Prisoners - review

When 2 young girls go missing after celebrating Thanksgiving with their families, the owner of an RV the girls were earlier seen playing near becomes the prime suspect in their abduction. But as hard as Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) tries, he’s not able to find evidence of the girls and has to let him go against the wishes of the girl’s parents.

With Alex Jones released back to the care of his aunt, Keller Dover takes matters into his own hands and determined to prove that Alex is involved in the abduction of his daughter Anna and her friend Joy, while watching him Keller abducts Alex and keeps him prisoner in his old house. 

With no doubt that he is responsible, Keller has no problem torturing Alex in an attempt to get the truth and although he doesn’t agree with it, Joy’s father Franklin keeps Keller’s secret in the hope it will bring back his daughter.

As Detective Loki investigates the abduction, he is drawn into looking at local sex offenders and in the process finds the body of a known paedophile hidden in the basement of a priest. With no apparent link to Anna and Joy’s abduction, Detective Loki continues to look in other directions and when he spots someone acting suspiciously at a candle light vigil for the girls he takes chase and thinks he’s onto something when he discovers the man has been spotted buying children’s clothes at the mall.

Praying that the girls are still alive, Detective Loki searches the man’s house in the hope of finding them, but when he discovers boxes full of snakes and bloodied children’s clothes it doesn’t look good until the man draws him a maze as a clue of finding the girls before committing suicide.

So with no idea what the maze means and a suspect dead, Detective Loki has a puzzle on his hands while Keller continues to keep Alex hostage in the hope he will finally break.

With twists and turns which keep you guessing the whole length of the movie, Prisoners is a great psychological thriller starring Hugh Jackman, Terence Howard and Maria Bello.

Definitely a movie to watch.

Secret Window - review

Johnny Depp stars as Morton Rainey, a recently divorced reclusive writer who spends his days writing and sleeping in a remote cabin surrounded by a lake and woodland.

When Morton is suddenly disturbed from a nap by a stranger knocking on the door, he is faced by a man who claims Morton stole his story and wants him to right his wrong. With Morton blowing him off as a nut-job fan he thinks nothing of it, but is intrigued when a manuscript is left on his porch which includes paragraphs from Morton’s novels.

As he tries to ignore John’s presence, Morton continues with his days of sleeping, drinking and writing until he is disturbed by silent phone calls, the death of his cat and the murders of locals – who Morton is accused of killing.

With his ex-wife Amy (Maria Bello) trying to reach out to him, Morton begins to suspect her new partner is behind everything that is happening, but when their house is burnt down and all that remains is a copy of the magazine featuring one of Morton’s stories, the movie takes a darker turn causing Morton to begin questioning his own mind.

Adapted from a Stephen King novel, I found this tense psychological thriller a great watch which had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

A great twist at the end added to the intensity of the film ensures no one has a chance of being able to work out the ending.

Definitely worth a watch.

Irresistable - review

Susan Sarandon stars as Sophie Hartley, a wife and mother who is convinced her husband’s work colleague Mara is stalking her. 

With the grief of losing her mother still raw, Sophie tries to focus on her art and family, but when things start to go missing and Mara becomes too close for comfort, Sophie is determined to prove she is being targeted.

As she turns stalker herself to prove her point, her family begin to worry about her state of mind to the point where her husband welcomes Mara’s input and help, but with Sophie still convinced she is trying to take over, is Mara really that much of a stranger?

Set in Australia and starring Emily Blunt with an Australian accent, I really wanted to see how this movie would turn out and was satisfied with the ending, but I wouldn’t rush to watch it again.

Half Light - review

Rachel Carlson (Demi Moore) is a best-selling author who after losing her son moves to a remote cottage in a Scottish village in an attempt to complete her new novel.

With no one around to distract her, Rachel hopes to relax, write and deal with the death of Thomas, but while she struggles with nightmares about Thomas she unexpectedly meets a lighthouse keeper on a walk around the island who she quickly connects with.

After spending time together Rachel invites Angus to join her at a local birthday party, but when he doesn’t show up she asks if anyone has seen him around and doesn’t get the response she was hoping for – he’s been dead for 7 years!

In an attempt to prove she’s not going mad, Rachel goes in search of Angus by returning to the lighthouse, but with the local psychic trying to warn her, Rachel has no idea the danger she’s in.

A tense thriller with an ending no one would predict – definitely worth a watch.
